Uma Thurman and Henry Golding have signed on for Netflix’s The Old Guard 2, adding their substantial skills to the upcoming follow-up, though it’s currently unknown who they will be playing. While the idea of a sequel to The Old Guard was already set in stone a while back, precious little is known about it at the moment. So learning about new cast members is definitely a treat. Thurman and Golding will be joining Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Vân Veronica Ngô, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, all of whom are set to reprise their roles from the first film.

Thurman is perhaps best known for her leading role as The Bride in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films, along with a memorable part in Pulp Fiction and near countless other hits. Some fans may also remember her from the infamous Batman and Robin, where she played Poison Ivy. More recently, she can be seen in the newly-released Disney Plus teen romantic drama Hollywood Stargirl, as well as in Showtime’s anthology drama series Super Pumped.
Meanwhile, Golding is a more relatively recent star, with celebrated roles in films like Crazy Rich Asians as Nick Young and the title character in 2021’s Snake Eyes. Those with a penchant for sci-fi and anime will also recognize Golding from the season 1 finale of Star Wars: Visions, where he played the conflicted Jedi Tsubaki. The Malaysian-British actor continues to impress with his performances, which is sure to be a boon to The Old Guard 2.
As for what the sequel’s story might entail, odds are it will take inspiration from The Old Guard comic by Greg Rucka, just like the first film did. 2020’s The Old Guard ended with the titular team of immortal warriors banishing one of their own for his arguably well-meaning betrayal while setting out to find more ways to help people. A stinger scene also revealed the return of Quynh (played by Ngô), a fellow immortal whom the others had thought lost. She was also very close to Theron’s lead character Andy, so folks might want to get ready for some more prime-cut eternal drama this time around.
However The Old Guard 2 turns out, it’s got some big shoes to fill. The Old Guard did huge numbers for Netflix, making it one of the many great 2020 films directed by women. But while Gina Prince-Bythewood, unfortunately, won’t be returning to direct the sequel, Yelling to the Sky director Victoria Mahoney has taken over those duties, and she certainly seems up for the task. Here’s hoping audiences don’t have to be immortal just to stand the wait.
The Old Guard 2 is currently in production.
