This week has been exciting as far as news goes, with a video of Conor McGregor going on the attack surfacing, UFC 241 taking place, and more. Without any hesitation, let’s get underway now.
#1 Conor McGregor punches an old man in a bar
Very few people can offer a proper explanation for why Conor McGregor does what he does on a regular basis. The fighter recently put forward his own brand of whiskey – Proper 12. Ever since then, he has not hesitated to market the product for everyone to see.
So, when an old man refused his offer for a drink of Conor’s whiskey, McGregor saw red. He assaulted the elderly gentleman in the bar, hitting him with a straight left. The man surprisingly was not that affected by the punch, and Conor was taken away from him.
The incident took place in April, although the video only surfaced recently.
This is the most recent in a long line of incidents involving McGregor – with him attacking and breaking the phone of a fan a few months back coming to mind.
It seems Conor McGregor might have avoided trouble on this one, but coming on the back of the dolly attack on the bus, UFC 229, and the incident with smashing the fan’s phone, McGregor might need to calm down before he does something irrevocable.
#2 Reactions to Conor McGregor attacking the elderly man
Speaking of Conor McGregor, there has been a lot of reaction from the MMA community for his actions in attacking the elderly man in the bar.
The most clear-cut opinion of the matter was had by his former UFC 229 opponent, Khabib Nurmagomedov. The UFC Lightweight Champion was extremely frank about what he felt should be done about McGregor, saying that he deserved to be jailed following the incident – as we reported earlier in the week.
Another man with an opinion about McGregor’s assault was none other than the UFC President, Dana White.
White said (via MMA Junkie) that this was a part of dealing with successful and rich fighters, bringing up the example of Mike Tyson.
#3 Daniel Cormier discusses retirement
At UFC 241, the UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier lost his fight to Stipe Miocic, consequently also losing his title.
The fighter was distraught after the loss, as he has a habit of being. However, even before the time for the fight came around, Daniel Cormier was talking about the chances of the UFC 241 fight being his last one for the company.
Daniel Cormier had long been talking about retiring after a final fight against Brock Lesnar in March of 2019 before he turned 40.
However, when plans for his fight against Brock Lesnar fell through, Cormier stayed on and did not retire at the time that he had originally been planning to.
Cormier talked to MMA Junkie about his plans for his retirement.
Retirement was definitely up there in his mind when he went into his fight against Stipe. When he lost the fight and was asked what his next move was, Cormier, revealed that he was going to take time to consider his options properly before he made a decision.
#4 Cody Garbrandt suffering from injuries; requires surgery
Ever since he lost his fight to TJ Dillashaw a couple of years back, Garbrandt has not had the best luck in his MMA career.
In fact, when he entered his fight against TJ Dillashaw in November of 2017, Cody Garbrandt was the Champion. He was one of the better fighters on the roster. However, during that fight, he was knocked out in a matter of moments.
The second time he fought, was around a year ago, against TJ Dillashaw in a rematch for the Championship. Unfortunately, even the August 2018 fight was not going to end up working. Cody Garbrandt lost again, this time even faster than his last loss – after he was knocked out in the first round.
A loss to Pedro Munhoz in early March this year compounded his issues in the UFC.
Given that Garbrandt was suffering from a hand injury for quite a while since March, meant that his problems were not ending. Finally, he announced that his hand had healed, and he was cleared to return to the Octagon.
Unfortunately, it is not to be. He is going under the knife as he preps for surgery due to a newly torn tendon. This means that Garbrandt will be out of action for the rest of the year and will only be returning in 2020.
#5 Nate Diaz talks about not wanting to face Khabib Nurmagomedov or Kamaru Usman
Nate Diaz made his return to the Octagon after more than three years away from UFC this week. Diaz’ return to the Octagon was marked by an incredible display against Anthony Pettis – something that proved beyond any reason for doubt that Diaz did not have even the slightest bit of ring rust on him.
However, before the fight at UFC 241, Nate Diaz talked about which fighters he would prefer to face in the Octagon – we reported on it earlier in the week.
He said that he felt that Khabib Nurmagomedov and Kamaru Usman might be Champions, but they were not really cool.
He then went on to name the people he would rather face, naming Conor McGregor, Jorge Masvidal, and his opponent for UFC 241 – Anthony Pettis.
Having already defeated Anthony Pettis, the ever-controversial and trash-talking Nate Diaz will now have to decide on who he wants to face next. Could a trilogy fight against Conor McGregor, against whom he has both a loss and a win, take place sometime in the future?
