Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his “special military operation” on Ukraine on February 24, with belief that he’d quickly secure control over the eastern European country. Ukraine responded with an unexpectedly strong defense, and the troops are still fighting nearly seven months later. In its latest update, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s Facebook post detailed actions of its troops against Russian forces, including the destruction of several Russian strongholds and ammo warehouses....

Ukraine, which regularly provides updates on Russian military losses, said on Facebook that since Vladimir Putin’s war began on February 24, Russia has lost 1,637 tanks, including 35 in a single day. The Russian military has also lost 36,900 military personnel, 3,811 armored combat vehicles, 828 artillery systems, 247 multiple rocket launchers, 107 air defense systems, 217 aircraft, 669 operational-tactical UAVs, 15 warships and boats, 2,685 vehicles and tankers, and 187 helicopters, according to Ukraine’s combat losses update, posted by the general staff of the country’s armed forces....

Law enforcement officers and military commissars from the National Police in Kyiv, as part of consolidated mobile groups, reportedly carried out raids of 420 establishments in order to verify citizens’ compliance with martial law restrictions and to prevent violations during curfews. “Under martial law, citizens must comply with curfew restrictions,” said Ivan Vyhovsky, the Kyiv police chief, according to an English translation of his statement. “Thus, Kyiv police together with military commissars patrol the city streets, squares and parks at night, as well as focus on inspections of night entertainment venues....

The British government formally announced on Saturday, in a decision that had been trailed earlier in the week, that it would deliver Challenger 2 tanks to Kyiv as well as additional artillery systems. The announcement followed a discussion between British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with the BBC reporting that the delivery would involve around a dozen tanks. Sunak’s office said that the leaders had “agreed on the need to seize on this moment with an acceleration of global military and diplomatic support” for Kyiv....

The 50-nation joint statement delivered by Bob Rae, Canada’s ambassador to the U.N., said the countries were “gravely concerned about the human rights situation” in China, before calling attention to the U.N. human rights office’s August 31 report on conditions in Xinjiang. For years, human rights groups and researchers have accused China’s government of suppressing the personal and religious freedoms of Uyghurs and other minorities in the region, where a counterterrorism campaign has targeted millions of Muslims for about five years....

Russia launched more than 84 rocket and air strikes targeting Ukraine on Monday, according to an operational update by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The kinds of systems reportedly used were identified by Forbes as Kh-101, Kh-555, Caliber, Iskander, S-300 and Tornado-S missiles.
